How do I select a specific time frame to search in?
You can search by any of our prebuilt time frames or can select the "dated:" option to select the specific start and end days for your search.What does previous period mean?
For each selected date range, whether relative ("Past 3 Months") or explicit ("1/1/2015 to 3/1/2015"), crime map selects a period of time in the past for comparison. We call this the "previous period." The selection of a previous period is complicated by leap years and other factors. We apply these rules (in order of priority):- start and end the previous period on the same dates as the search dates
- use a comparable period of time (not always exact due to above)
- select a non-overlapping period
Crime Map
The crime map displays all crimes that match your search. Click on the areas or points on the map to display information about the crime incidents there.
For example, you can search for all homicides with gun over the past 8 years near me and then quickly turn that into all violent crimes with gun over the past 8 years near me and then all property crimes with gun over the past 2 weeks near me. In addition, you can click on the location to get a list of everything under the point, including specific CCN numbers, so no incident is ever truly hidden.
When zoomed in: When zoomed in you will begin to see a ring of color and eventually icons will appear as well. Just like the colors you see when zoomed out, the ring, as well as icon, each represent some or all of the crime types present at that location.

Why do some crimes seem to be missing from view?
First, if your search returns more than 10,000 incidents, not all incidents will be mapped (see below FAQ). In other cases, crimes may be hidden because they tend to be stacked on top of one another. To avoid privacy concerns, the crime locations are moved to the nearest block center, and this greatly decreases the range of locations and causes the stacking. To get around this, we provide you with the sentence form at the top as a way to quickly and easily explore data by running multiple searches.For example, you can search for all homicides with gun over the past 8 years near me and then quickly turn that into all violent crimes with gun over the past 8 years near me and then all property crimes with gun over the past 2 weeks near me. Why can I only see 10,000 crimes and which ones are shown?
Due to limitations set in our system and to help make sure the map doesn't have issue loading, the map only displays 10,000 crimes. When you have selected a search that goes over this 10,000 event limitation, the map displays the most recent 10,000 events. All other statistics resulting from the search include all crime events in your search. If you want to make sure you are seeing all the crime events try changing the area of your search to something like "in ward" or "near a location."What happens when a crime event occurs on the boundary of two areas?
Every crime event is assigned to a specific point, and boundaries between areas are finite, infinitely thin, lines. As a result, while an event may appear to be on a boundary line, it does actually is on one side or the other.Why are some wards/PSAs/areas/etc. missing?
If your search has no results in an area, it will not appear with any overlay which could look like something is missing.How do I use the shaded maps and what do the colors mean?
The shaded map shows the areas searched using a range of colors to represent values. Click any area to show its relative color as well as specific details on the area including the number of incidents in that specific area.What do the colors of the circles on the point map mean?

In Summary
The summary includes the elements selected in your search as well as summarizing the change in crime events between your search and the previous period.
How is the change in incidents calculated?
The change in incidents is the change between the previous period and your searched dates.What does "previous" period mean?

Why is there no bar?

All statistics presented here are based on preliminary DC criminal code offense definitions. The data do not represent official statistics submitted to the FBI under the Uniform Crime Reporting program (UCR) or National Incident Based Reporting System (NIBRS). All preliminary offenses are coded based on DC criminal code and not the FBI offense classifications. 1) On February 1 2020, the methodology of geography assignments of crime data was modified to increase accuracy. From January 1 2020 going forward, all crime data will have Ward, ANC, SMD, BID, Neighborhood Cluster, Voting Precinct, Block Group and Census Tract values calculated prior to, rather than after, anonymization to the block level. This change impacts approximately one percent of Ward assignments.
2) All data visualizations on maps should be considered approximate, and attempts to derive specific addresses are strictly prohibited. The reports provided by this application include only events that can be mapped.
3) Please note that changes to MPD's PSA and police district boundaries occasionally occur. The statistics provided through DC Crime Mapping Application are based on current police boundaries as of January 10, 2019.
4) Please note that changes to the District of Columbia’s Ward boundaries occasionally occur. The statistics provided through DC Crime Mapping Application are based on current Ward boundaries as of January 1, 2022.

6) Sex Assault Data Availability: In an effort to provide more clear information about the most serious sex assaults that are most closely aligned with the public's perception of rape and attempted rape, the most serious sex abuse categories are included in the reports of DC Code Index Violent Crimes: Sex Assault. The figures reported in this category include First Degree Sex Abuse, Second Degree Sex Abuse, Attempted First Degree Sex Abuse and Assault with Intent to Commit First Degree Sex Abuse against adults. Data in this format is available online from 2011. Similar to the other offense data, the sex assault statistics are subject to change due to a variety of reasons, such as a change in classification, the determination that certain offense reports were unfounded, or late reporting. Please understand that any comparisons between MPD preliminary data as published on this website and the official crime statistics published by the FBI under the Uniform Crime Reporting Program (UCR) are inaccurate and misleading.
7) Please also be aware that on Sunday, August 23, 2015, the MPD implemented a new records management system called Cobalt. The offense categories presented within this application have remained the same; however, all statistics are subject to change due to a variety of reasons, such as a change in classification, the determination that certain offense reports were unfounded, or late reporting.
